2nd Article for the EcopreNEETs project
In the wake of pandemic COVID-19, the difficulties and demands of everyday life facing young people not in employment, education or training (NEETs) have become more acute than ever. The pandemic has exacerbated existing inequalities and vulnerabilities, hitting young people hardest, especially those living in rural areas. As we go through these uncertain times, there is a need to equip young people with the skills and competencies that will enable them to find employment in their chosen field, with the ultimate goal of long-term career success.
NEETs face a multi-faceted risk of occupational, digital and social exclusion. With the rapid development of technology and the changing nature of work, the skills required in the labour market are evolving at an unprecedented rate. The pandemic has accelerated this trend, further widening the gap between the skills that NEETs possess and those required by employers.
To thrive in the increasingly competitive labour market, NEETs need to be adequately trained and supported by policy makers and by the whole of Europe, who already prioritise them, in order to develop essential skills for today's demanding working life. Adaptability is key to navigating the rapidly changing work landscape, while effective communication is essential to building professional relationships and working with colleagues. Creativity and critical thinking are invaluable assets in problem solving and innovation, while emotional intelligence allows individuals to navigate complex social dynamics.
In today's digital age, proficiency in digital skills is no longer optional but essential. From basic computer literacy to more advanced technical skills, NEETs need to invest in developing their digital competences to remain competitive in the labor market. The EcopreNEETs programme, aims to support young people in a comprehensive way, through training and acquisition of ecological, entrepreneurial and digital skills.
As NEETs embark on their journey to employment and education, they need to seek out resources and support systems that will guide them along the way and equip them with all the right 'weapons'. Career counselling services, vocational training programmes and mentoring initiatives through schemes such as EcopreNEETs can provide invaluable guidance, training and encouragement. In addition, networking events and job fairs offer opportunities to connect with potential employers and explore different career paths.
While the road ahead may seem full of doubts, it is important for NEETs to remain resilient and prepared in pursuing their goals. By investing in skills development, embracing digital literacy and making the most of available resources, NEETs can unlock a world of opportunity and chart a path to a better future, especially in their re-entry into professional life in the province. With the right tools, the right mentoring and community awareness, NEETs can be empowered to overcome barriers, realise their potential and join a healthy working life with long-term benefits.
